The band formed in early 2013 when singer/songwriter and lead guitarist Martin Muzz Murray formally of local heroes Springheel Jack and Longface was disillusioned by the current direction he was taking in the covers band scene and eager to return to his roots of punk rock and melodies. During Christmas 2012 Martin met up with Steve Robinson - an old school friend. Expressing a desire to emulate his drumming hero Charlie Watts and fuelled by their love of obscure rock and electronic bands they decided to get together for a jam session. Steve s younger brother Jim joined them on bass, and the rest, as they say, is history. By the end of the first 3 hour session we had written 3 songs, which are usually the first 3 tracks on the set list, pretty much unchanged says Jim they came from all of us, we had no specific direction we wanted to take, so we just let it happen.
The band added keyboards pretty earlier on to beef up the 3-piece sound. With Martin juggling the singing, guitar and keyboards it became apparent Steve and Jim would need to pitch in with the singing and song writing. They duly delivered and with these elements in place, the Solid State sound was born. Grooving bass lines, Motorik drum beats and soaring guitar solos are the weapons of choice. Ultimately we like to just let it rip. We play hard, but make sure the groove doesn t get lost. Jim and I try and keep it simple which allows Martin the freedom to play, says Steve. We like to surprise the listener, taking the song in unexpected directions and catching you off guard, Martin added. What it comes down to for us, remarks Jim, Is that we really enjoy playing together, we write music for ourselves and hope that people out there dig what we re doing.
